Ahadeeth regarding straightening the rows in the Prayer – Hadeeth 1

Reference: http://www.sahab.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=154538

In the name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

All praise is for Allaah; may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allaah, his family, companions and whoever follows his guidance.

The obligatory prayers which were obligated upon the Prophets, Messengers and all the believers in every time and place, these prayers have an important status. They are the greatest pillar of Islaam after the two testimonies of faith. There are many texts in the Book which contain the command to establish the obligatory prayers.

Allaah says,

{Establish the Prayers, and give Zakaah}

Allaah did not say, ‘pray, pray’ [rather he said: ‘Establish the Prayers’], so the Believer should pay attention to this.

In this brief treatise, I shall mention some Prophetic texts and narrations from the Salaf which explain how the prayer is to be established according to the correct manner.

1. Upon the authority of Abu Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said, ‘the Messenger of Allaah used to touch our shoulders in the Prayer, and say:

Straighten [the rows] and do not differ lest your hearts also differ. Let the men of wisdom and understanding stand closest to me., then those after them and those after them.

Abu Mas’ood said:

Today, you are even more severe in your differing. [1] [2]

This is a very important hadeeth, we can understand from it the obligation of straightening the rows [in prayer] because not doing this leads to hearts differing. Hearts differing then leads to differing of other matters much worse, such as differing in Aqaa’id (beliefs) and Manaahij (paths and methodologies); and differing in terms of enmity, animosity and spillage of blood – and this has occurred old and new.

Therefore the obligation upon the Imaams of the Masaajid is to attach importance to straightening the rows [of people in the congregation], always filling the gaps in the rows which are otherwise filled by Shaytaan; and constantly reminding the congregation about the consequences of not straighteining the rows and not filling the gaps.

May Allaah guide the Imaams of the Masaajid as well as the congregation to properly fulfil this great obligation. May He guide them to not being lenient with this issue. Leniency with this obligation will lead to many dangerous consequences which the Hadeeth shows us and we have indicated previously.

It is also an obligation to bring forward the people of wisdom and intelligence and then those after them – just as the Messenger of Allaah (salAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered and the his noble companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) implemented.

Footnotes

[TN] The actual title of this research paper, authored by Shaykh Rabee’ Ibn Haadee, is entitled:

“The great concern the Messenger (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) and his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) placed on straightening the rows in the Prayer and filling any gaps.”

I have decided to translate small sections of his research and release them independently in order to make it easier to read and understand. I ask Allaah to facilitate its translation and compilation.

In some cases I may adapt the article for the English reader, such as moving the references to the footnotes as well as any repeating narrations mentioned by the author.

I have also summarised the references by mentioning the more common books of hadeeth. For the full references, please refer to the original Arabic article below.

[2] Imaam Ahmad also narrated in his Musnad (No. 17102), saying:
Wakee’ and Abu Mu’aawiyah narrated to us saying: Al-A‘mash narrated to us on the authority of ‘Ammaarah Ibn Umayr at-Taymi, upon the authority of Abu Mu’ammar Abdillah ibn Sakhbirah al-Azadee, upon the authority of Aboo Mas’ood al-Ansaaree (may Allaah be pleased with him) said,

The Messenger of Allah (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to touch our shoelders in the prayer. Wakee’ said: He used to say:

Straighten yourselves and do not differ, lest your hearts also differ. Let the people of wisdom and understanding stand behind me, then those closest to them and then those closest to them.

Abu Mas’ood said:

You are today more severe in your differing.
