Announcing a Muslim’s Death via the Internet

Reference: From the lecture entitled “The Responsibility of the Scholars and the Callers [to Islaam]” of Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan – may Allaah protect and preserve him; And by way of the [Shaykh’s] book al-Ijaabaat al-Muhimmah fil-Mashaakil al-Mulimmah – Volume 2, Page 19

Question: What is the ruling regarding announcing the death of the scholars and other than them via the internet and via news media [services]; is this [considered] as an-na’yu (making an announcement of someone’s death)?

Response: Making an announcement about the death of a scholar and others from amongst the Muslims; There is no harm in announcing the death of a Muslim in order to supplicate for him and to offer the funeral prayer over him. This is not from an-na’yu. The Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) informed his Companions about the death of an-Najaashi when he died; So he and his Companions went out [to the masjid] to offer the funeral prayer in absence [of the deceased].

So, to make an announcement about someone’s death, whether it is in the newspapers or in the masaajid or via what they call the internet, there is no harm in making the announcement about it with the intention to supplicate for him and to offer the [funeral] prayer over him; or with the intention that whoever has an outstanding loan against the deceased should come forth and take his right in full – there is no harm in [any of] this. As for announcing the death from the aspect of grieving [for the deceased], then this is impermissible, this is what is referred to as an-niyaahah (lamenting, wailing and loud weeping).
