'Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Mahdee (rahima-hullaah) mentions:
We were with Maalik Ibn Anas when a man came saying:
((O Abu ’Abdullaah, I have travelled a distance of six months. The people of my land sent me to ask you about a matter)).
So he said:
((Ask!))
So the man asked him some things, so he replied:
((I do not know))
...and the man thought he had come to someone who knew everything, so he said:
((What shall I tell the people of my land when I return to them?))
He said:
((Say to them: Maalik Ibn Anas does not know)).

What is the ruling of using toothpaste while fasting during Ramadaan?
There is no problem in using toothpaste while fasting during Ramadaan or other than it as long as it is not swallowed. However not using it is better because it has a strong potency that may enter into the stomach while one is unaware and this is why the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) said to Qayt ibn Sabrah:
“Excessively practice Istinshaaq (Putting water in one’s mouth and spitting it out during ablution) except if you are fasting.”
So it is better not to use toothpaste while fasting and there is plenty of time, so if one delays it until he breaks his fast, he would have protected himself from something that is feared to ruin his fast.

ما حكم استعمال معجون الأسنان للصائم في نهار رمضان؟ |
استعمال المعجون للصائم في رمضان وغيره لا بأس به إذا لم ينزل إلى معدته، ولكن الأولى عدم استعماله؛ لأن له نفوذاً قوياً قد ينفذ إلى المعدة والإنسان لا يشعر به. ولهذا قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلّم للقيط بن صبرة: «بالِغ في الاستنشاق إلا أن تكون صائماً»، فالأولى ألا يستعمل الصائم المعجون، والأمر واسع فإذا أخَّره حتى أفطر فيكون قد توقى ما يخشى أن يكون به فساد الصوم |
