Performing Hajj on behalf of my father The Permanent Committee for Islaamic Research and Verdicts

Question: I am a young man who works in Saudi Arabia. My wages aren't much, but are enough for my necessities in life, and my daily living costs, al Hamdulillah. I have made Hajj for myself three times, al Hamdulillah, and that is because it is very easy for those who live in Saudi to perform the Hajj, whether they are here for work or for other reasons.

I have a father who lives in Egypt and has not made Hajj yet, due to the lack of money needed to perform it. Based on the fact that he is fit and well, he does not have the financial ability to make Hajj and my wages are not much, as I have mentioned before, is it possible for me to make Hajj on his behalf? Some friends of mine told me that my doing Hajj on his behalf while he is unable to perform the Hajj himself, neither from his own financial means or from mine, is not permissible. Please benefit me [with an answer], May Allaah benefit you.

Response: If the situation is as you have told me, that you father is fit and well, but is unable to make the Hajj due to the lack of financial ability, then the Hajj is not obligatory for him to perform, due to the statement of Allaah, the Most High:

"And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allâh, those who can afford the expenses "

So it is not permissible for you to perform Hajj on his behalf, nor for anyone else to do it for him. However, it is permissible for one who is financially capable, to help him in gathering the necessary funds to perform the Hajj himself.

And with Allaah is Tawfeeq, and may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon our prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.
