How does a person know he is from Ahlus Sunnah?

Reference: Sharh Usool I’tiqaad Ahlis Sunnah lil-Laalikaaee

It was said to Sahl Ibn Abdillah at-Tastaree: How does a person know he is upon the way of [Ahlus] Sunnah wa Jama’ah?

He replied: ‘If he knows from himself ten qualities:

  1. He does not abandon the Jamaa’ah (i.e. the main body of the Muslims along with their ruler)
  2. He does not insult the companions of the Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam)
  3. He does not rebel against this Ummah with the sword
  4. He does not deny the Qadr (the Pre-Decree)
  5. He does not have any doubt regarding Imaan
  6. He does not quarrel and debate over the religion
  7. He does not abandon praying the [funeral] prayer over any person who dies from the people of the Qiblah [i,e a Muslim] due to a sin
  8. He does not abandon wiping over the leather socks
  9. & 10.  He does not leave the congregation of the Muslims under the authority of any Muslim ruler – whether he is oppressive or just.

متى يعلم الرجل أنه على السنة والجماعة

قيل لسهل بن عبدالله التستري : متى يعلم الرجل أنه على السنة و الجماعة ؟

قال إذا عرف من نفسه عشر خصال :

لا يترك الجماعة

 ولا يسب أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم

ولا يخرج على هذه الأمة بالسيف

ولا يكذب بالقدر

لا يشك في الإيمان

ولا يماري في الدين

ولا يترك الصلاة على من يموت من أهل القبلة بالذنب

ولا يترك المسح على الخفين

ولا يترك الجماعة خلف كل وال جار أو عدل
