How to deal with “hizbiyyeen” amongst the common Muslims

Question: Groups and sects have become widespread amongst us, and this is the case in almost all of the Muslim lands – except for whoever Allaah has mercy upon – and how small are these people in number (those who have not become affected by deviated sects). What therefore is the principle used in dealing with the common ‘hizbiyeen’? [1]

Response: The great masses of the Muslims; the large majority of them are to be treated with leniency, patience, advice and to furthermore persevere in advising them from time to time. They are not to be boycotted because they themselves are the ones who are to be preached to; they are the arena in calling to Allaah.

If these people are boycotted then who will we call?? Therefore, these people should be shown goodness, patience, leniency and advice.

All praise is due to Allaah, we have seen much good in them when we become active and face the majority of the Muslims; we have seen a positive effect upon them and they respond well, improve and are open to [our call].

How many acts of Shirk have been abandoned [because of da’wah]? How many actions contradictory to Islaam, innovations and sins have been left alone since the call of Ahl Sunnah first entered in the various communities?

This effect has been consistent throughout various societies, even communities that were enveloped in Soofiyyah, the belief of the shee’ah or partisanship.

So you will find in this much good. Of course, the effect [of da’wah] will differ according to the differing conditions and times. In some of these places, those who call to innovations will be prevalent and they will have some acceptance amongst the people. Due to this type of situation, the message of Ahl Sunnah may not have such an effect and the acceptance amongst the people will be little. However, these types of people require time as well as having more wisdom and patience.

We ask Allaah to make us keys of goodness, and closures to evil.

Footnotes

[1] Hizbiyeen (sing. hizbee) is a word derived from ‘hizbiyyah’ or ‘tahazzub,’ both comprehensive words referring to the action of ascribing to any group, belief or movement opposing the Qur’an, Sunnah and methodology of the pious predecessors. The questioner therefore refers to the ‘average common members of groups opposed to the correct path.’
