Before you is a rebuttal of a particular narration that has been used and spread by a member of the deviated Sufi Sect known as the “Brailawees” in Birmingham, England. The Athar (Narration): Ibn Abee Shaybah narrates from Abu Muaawiyah from Al-A'amash from Abu Saalih from Maalik Ad-Daar, who was the treasurer for Umar, he said: The people suffered from drought in the time of Umar, so a man came to the grave of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihee Wasallam) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Pray for rain for your Ummah, because they are being destroyed.” So someone came to the man in his dream and said: “Go to Umar and convey upon him Salaam....” ...the Athar. This particular narration has been mentioned by Al-Haafidh Abdullah bin Muhammad Ibn Abee Shaybah Al-Koofi (d.235H) in his book Al-Musannaf Fil-Ahaadeeth Wal-Ataar (7/482). It is also mentioned by Al-Haafidh bin Hajr in Al-Fathul-Baari in Kitaabul-Istisqaa (2/397). The Reply: 1. The narration is weak and it is not accepted. This is because the chain of narration is authentic up to Abu Saalih and he narrates from Maalik Ad-Daar. The narrator Maalik Ad-Daar has been declared as being unknown (Majhool) by the well known scholars of the Science of Hadith. The reliability and precision of a narrator are amongst two conditions that must be present and known before a narration is declared as being authentic. As Shaykh Naasiruddin Al-Albaani mentions: Al-Haafidh al-Mundhiree reports another narration from Maalik Ad-Daar in his world famous book of narrators; At-Tarhheeb (2/41) and says: “At-Tabaraanee reports it in Al-Kabeer, its narrators up to Maalik Ad-Daar are well known and reliable, but as for Maalik Ad-Daar then I do not know him.” This is also stated by another famous scholar of Hadith called Al-Haithamee in his book Majma' Uz -Zawaaid (3/125). Ibn Abee Haatim also mentions Maalik Ad-Daar in his book A-Jarh Wat-Ta'deel (4/1/213) and does not mention anyone who narrates from him except Abu Saalih and Ibn Abee Haatim, who is well known for his memorisation and knowledge did not quote anyone who declared Maalik Ad-Daar to be reliable. Therefore he remains unknown and the narration is weak and rejected. 2. The second reply to this narration is based upon the fact that this narration is contrary to the established Sunnah and the actions of the Sahaabah (RadhiAllahu `Anhum), during the lifetime of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihee Wasallam) and after his death. This type of action and form of Tawassul also leads to the committing of Shirk and the worshipping of graves. The Sahaabah were the most knowledgeable people with regards to the Shariah of Allah and not a single Companion is established to have gone to the grave of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihee Wasallam) to ask him to pray for rain. Rather what is established from the authentic Sunnah is that Umar (RadhiAllahu `Anhu) used to ask the Prophet's uncle Al-Abbass to pray to Allah for rain as is established in Saheeh Al-Bukhaari. Sadly the above only reflects the methodology of the people of innovation and desires. They first establish their Aqeedah upon partisanship and deviation. They then try to utilise weak and fabricated narrations in order to justify their innovated practices and incorrect beliefs. This is in total opposition to the methodology of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaa'ah. Those who establish their beliefs and practices in accordance with the Qur'aan and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihee Wasallam). Doing so upon the understanding and interpretations of the Sahaabah. They place knowledge before speech and action and adhere to the methodology of the people of Hadith Wal-Athar. As for a more detailed discussion on the different types of Tawassul and its rulings, refer to the well known book by Shaykh Naasiruddin Al-Albaani; Tawassul, Its Types and Its Rulings. We now wait for this individual to provide further proofs to justify his innovations and we look forward to rebutting the doubts that are raised by the misguided Sufi Sect of Birmingham, England. We ask Allah, the Most High, to allow this response to be a beneficial reminder and to remove the false doubts and lies that are being spread in the name of Islam and the Sunnah. Indeed Allah is the One Who grants success and Guides whom He Wills.
