It was reported by Bukharee and others:

“It is indeed from the delight of a non-Arab or an Arab that if they embrace Islaam they would be blessed with a person of the Sunnah, and it is indeed from their misery to be tested with a person of Bid’ah or desires.”

I’ll give you an example; two men arguing about some verses in the Book of Allaah, one of them a Kharijee and the other a Murji.

The Kharijee said:

“The saying of Allaah:

{Verily, Allaah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqûn (pious).}

This is proof that acts of worship performed by sinners are unaccepted because no one can say that they are from Allaah’s pious servants.”

The Murji replied:

“That verse is in regards to Shirk, so whoever does not commit Shirk will have his deeds accepted due to the saying of Allaah:

{Whoever brings a good deed (Islaamic Monotheism and deeds of obedience to Allaah and His Messenger (??? ???? ???? ????)) shall have ten times the like thereof to his credit...}

The Kharijee stated:

“The saying of Allaah:

{And whosoever disobeys Allaah and His Messenger (Muhammad (??? ???? ???? ????)), and transgresses His (set) limits, He will cast him into the Fire, to abide therein; and he shall have a disgraceful torment.}

This verse disproves this opinion of yours.”

The Murji countered:

“What is intended by ‘disobedience’ in this verse is Shirk and setting up partners unto Allaah due to the saying of Allaah:

{Verily, Allaah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners (in worship) with Him, but He forgives sins other than that for whom He wills.}”

The Kharijee went on:

“The saying of Allaah:

{Is then he who is a believer like him who is a Faasiq (sinner)? They are not equal.}

This is a proof that the sinner is from the people who will enter the Hellfire and abide therein for eternity.”

The Murji responded:

“The saying of Allaah at the end of the verse:

{...and it will be said to them: "Taste you the torment of the Fire which you used to deny."}

This proves that those intended in this verse are those who denied Allaah and His Messenger, and the sinner from the people of the Qiblah is a believer who has complete faith.”

The ignorant who come across this debate would believe that this is the absolute truth and would hold fast to it as if biting on to it with their molars, while both opinions are unacceptable and the people of knowledge and guidance disagree with both opinions.

The opinion of the Salaf and those firmly grounded in knowledge contradicts these opinions, because returning to the Sunnah which explains what has been sent down to the people in the Qur-aan is compulsory. But the people of innovations and desires suffice themselves with their opinions, desires and emotions.
