Using Inhalers and Breath Fresheners during Ramadhaan

Reference: Majmoo Fataawa Shaykh Ibn Baz. Vol. 15 – Fasting; Fataawa regarding Fasting, q13.

Question: What is the ruling for the asthmatic person to use inhalers through the mouth during the Fast in Ramadhaan?

Response: The ruling of this is permissibility if there is a necessity to do so. This is due to the saying of Allaah (the Exalted),

{He has explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you, except under compulsion of necessity} [06:119]

Similarly, inhalers do not resemble food and drink; rather [the ruling] is closer to that of drawing blood for analysis, and taking injections that do not deliver nutrition to the body.

(Shaykh Ibn Baz)

Question: Breath fresheners are found in the markets, whereby if a person sprays them into ones mouth, the spray condenses into a liquid. Is it permissible for the Fasting person to use them in order to remove the smell from the mouth?

Response: It is permissible for the person Fasting to use perfumed sprays for the mouth as long as they are only gaseous (air). However, if they contain liquids or any other products which are soluble, it is obligatory upon him to remove that which he has in his mouth.

ولأنه لا يشبه الأكل والشرب فأشبه سحب الدم للتحليل والإبر غير المغذية. (الشيخ ابن باز)
