A Hadeeth regarding good health and free time

In the name of Allāh, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

The Prophet (sal Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said,

((نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيهِما كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ : الصِّحَّةُ والفَراغُ))

There are two blessings which many people waste: good health and free time

‘Abdullāh Ibn Abbās.

Commentary:

  • People are deceived by their health and free time, due to not realising how great a blessing the both are, until a time comes when a person either becomes occupied or ill.
  • The Salaf would liken good health to a crown on top of a person’s head, he cannot see what he is wearing however others see and admire it. The meaning of this is that a person rarely appreciates good health whilst he has it, and when he becomes ill and sees others with good health, he laments and yearns for it.
  • We should utilise both our health and free time in that which pleases Allāh.

The two feet of the child of Adam shall not move from before his Lord on the Day of Resurrection, until he is asked about five things: about his life and what he did with it, about his youth and what he wore it out in, about his wealth and how he earned it and spent it upon, and what he did with what he knew.’ [At-Tirmidhī]
