Allah gives victory to the Muslims only when they fulfil the causes of victory and authority.
Allaah, the Blessed and Most High, said,
{Allah will surely support those who support [His cause]. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Might. They are those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give Zakaah and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And to Allah belongs the outcome of [all] matters} [20:40]
The context of this great blessed Aayah contains five causes – if the people of Imaan fulfil them – they will be deserving of victory and authority.
First Matter: Establishing Tawheed and Ikhlaas
Making all actions sincere for Allah, the Exalted alone. This includes Jihad an all other acts of worship. This is taken from the saying of Allah:
{Allah will surely support those who support [His cause]} [20:40]
i.e. a person seeks the Face of Allah; with his acts of Worship, he does not desire pride, fame, showing off nor to be heard. Rather, he only desires the help and victory of Allah, the Majestic, and to aid the religion
Ikhlaas (sincerity) is the greatest cause of authority and victory. Allah, the Blessed and Most High, said:
{Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that – then those are the defiantly disobedient} [24:55]
Second Matter: Establishing Salah (the Obligatory Prayers)
This is by being diligent regarding them and fulfilling them along with their pillars, obligations, conditions, within the prescribed times – as Allah, the Blessed and Most High, ordered us.
The Prayers – O Believers – are also from the greatest causes of victory, the greatest reasons for authority. Allaah, the Most High, said:
{Seek help through patience and prayer} [02:153]
Third Matter: Giving Zakah
It is donated to those deserving of it as Allah ordered it to be given with goodness from a person’s heart. By it the souls of people are purified, and the needs of the poor and needy are fulfilled. Zakah is a cause for the Ummah to be honoured, gain authority, become established and materialistic strength is acquired.
Only Allah knows the amount of evil which is prevented due to giving Zakah, and how victory and authority is gained.
Fourth matter: Calling to goodness
This is calling to everything which Allaah and His Messenger commanded, including the obligations of Islam as well as the various voluntary acts of worship. This rectifies the people and is an avenue of sincere advice, protecting their honour and authority. All of this can only be realised by them obeying Allah, and abiding by his legislation.
Fifth Matter: Warning against evil
Evil actions bring about harm upon the Ummah, severe calamities and the further spreading of more evil. Therefore, by prohibiting all evil and warning against it, the Ummah is protected from adversities, a painful sorrow ending.
[Conclusion]
We should reflect upon these five great matters which Allah, the Blessed and Most High, has combined within one Aayah. The Ummah implementing them is the greatest avenue for it gaining authority and being victorious, and its bliss in this life and the Hereafter.
