Performing the Tawaaf Right Away

Question: If I intended to [perform] the ‘umrah or the hajj, and [thereby] I assumed the state of ihraam and entered al-Masjid al-Haraam, should I pray the two rak’ahs of tahiyyatul-masjid, or should I begin my tawaaf right away?

Response: That which is legislated for whoever enters al-Masjid al-Haraam from the hajj and ‘umrah pilgrims is to begin with the tawaaf, and the two rak’ahs they pray after the tawaaf [behind the station of Ibraaheem] will suffice the [two rak’ahs of] tahiyyatul-masjid. If, however, there is a legislated reason preventing him from [beginning] the tawaaf upon entering the Masjid, then he should pray two rak’ahs of tahiyyatul-masjid, and then perform the tawaaf when that is easy for him. And likewise, if he entered the Masjid and the [congregational] prayer had just begun, then he should pray with the people [in congregation] and then perform the tawaaf after that.

And Allaah is the Expounder of all success.
