The community disregarding the student of knowledge

Question: One of the worse problems that a student of knowledge faces is when society turns away from him and his knowledge; he feels he has no real role in society. This is because a materialistic society in this day and age only values a person in terms of business-like materialistic measures.
So what is the solution to this in your view – O esteemed Shaykh?

How does a student of knowledge deal with this? Should he live in a closed community wherein he can [continue] learning and living? What should he do?

I hope you can offer us advise which you yourself benefitted from your Shaykhs (teachers), and they benefited from their Shaykhs.

Response: What the questioner said is inaccurate, rather what is correct is that knowledge advances its people, and elevates them in every community. If a student of knowledge goes to America, England, France or any other country, his knowledge will raise him amongst the Muslim minority, and amongst those people of Shirk who he calls to Allah. This is because they will be guided to the truth when they become aware of it and its clear evidences, as well as the noble manners of the people truth.

Islam is a religion which appeals to a person’s innate nature; it is a religion of justice and manners; a religion of strength, a religion of enthusiasm and energy, a religion of comfort and solace – in fact a religion of every type of virtue.
Therefore a student of knowledge who traverses with insight, knows the Islamic evidences, knows the rulings of Islam and implements them – his head will always be held up high; respected and honourable wherever he may be, regardless of whether he is in a town, tribe or any other place.

[He will remain honoured] as long as he adorns himself with knowledge in both speech and actions, far removed from the repulsion of open sinners and criminals.

Such a person, and those similar to him, are beloved to Allah and His righteous worshippers as long as he learns, performs righteous actions, advises his brothers, cares for them and is focused on benefiting them through his knowledge, manners, wealth and status – as the Prophets and righteous people did.

As for saying a student of knowledge has no place in society, and his saying is generally disregarded – this is a false statement, not conforming to reality as we have clarified. A student of knowledge, who has insight regarding his religion, guards the commandments of Allah, and a sincere advisor to the people – his head is high, honoured and respected wherever he may be. [He is respected] whether he is on a plane, a train, in the sea or on land, and whatever country he is in, as long as he remains sincere for the sake of Allah, manifests his knowledge and the call to Allah, is good to the people by showing them gentleness and good speech – for him is the glad tiding and a good ending; he will receive praise from his community as well as great reward from Allah, the Majestic and exalted.

Allah said,

{Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good} [12:90]

{And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good} [29:69]

Allah, the Majestic and exalted, said addressing His Prophet,

{So be patient; indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous} [11:49]

There are many Aayaat with this meaning.

Even if it is decreed that some of those who call to Allah were not able fulfil their objective, and instead faced harms and trials; do they not have an example in the Messengers who all faced harms and trails? People belittled them in fact some of them were killed. So the student of knowledge has a role model in them in how they were tolerant and patient – may peace and blessings be upon them.

If we assume that a student of knowledge is not respected by his people, this does not harm him, because he did not seek knowledge for this; he only sought knowledge to save himself from ignorance, and to remove people from darkness to light.

So the one who calls to Allah, the Glorified, and is truthful and sincere; for him is are the glad-tidings of goodness, honour, glory and a good ending. This is as long as he follows an upright path, he adorns himself with good manners, remains upon guidance and lives a praiseworthy life; without being too harsh or extreme; and without delving into matters which do not involve him.

As long as he remains thus, he will be upon much goodness, similar to the Prophets and Messengers and especially the last of them, the most virtuous of them, the Imaam of all Callers and Mujaahideen – our Prophet Muhammad (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam); and then similar to those who followed him upon goodness.

Allah is the guardian of guidance.
