Question: What is the [legislated] time [one is permitted] to assume the ihraam for hajj?

Response: The [legislated] time [one is permitted] to assume the ihraam for hajj are the months which Allaah has mentioned in His statement:

{The Hajj is (in) the well-known months}, [Soorah al-Baqarah, Aayah 197]

…and they are: Shawwaal, Dhul-Qi’dah and the [first] ten days of Dhul-Hijjah; So if he assumed the ihraam for hajj before these months, then according to the majority [of the people of knowledge] his ihraam is incorrect. And if he assumed the ihraam and stood in ‘Arafah before the arrival of Fajr on the night of the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah then his hajj is correct. As for the ‘umrah, then he can assume the ihraam at anytime [without restriction].
